S-H-A-M-E!!! Nigerian Lawmaker Charged (£240) N60,000 For Watching Pornography During Olympics

While Nigeria’s athletes were flopping at all sporting events during the just concluded 2012 London Olympics, the Chairman House Committee On Sports, Honourable Godfrey Ali Gaiya was allegedly busy enjoying himself at his Marriot Hotel suite, watching pornographic channels.

According to the report, the lawmaker, who represents Jaba/Zangon Kataf Federal constituency of Kaduna state in the Federal House of Reps, was said to have attracted a big attention to himself when he was about to check out of the hotel, and the hotel management had requested that he settle his total bills before leaving.

He was said to have thrown caution to the wind, insisting that the hotel was trying to play a fast one on him because his accommodation and other expenses was supposed to be borne by the organizing committee.

While the hotel was restrained not to embarrass him with the disclosure of his bill, the action of Hon. Gaiya had already attracted attention of busy bodies and concerned Nigerians.

At a stage, when the hotel could not withstand his drama, it was disclosed that he had incurred a lot of costs watching pornography channels that were considered premium channels with premium charges.

He grudgingly, admitted watching the channels and was made to pay about two hundred and forty pounds sterling (£240) before checking out.

I'm sure He enjoyed his "Pornolympics" very well and He won a "Gold Medal" for Nigeria, the House of Reps, Kataf Federal Constituency of Kaduna State and the House Committee on Sports.

Whoever said or thought we didn't win a medal at the just concluded 2012 London Olympics? You better start thinking again.

In a recent interview with V Magazine, when asked what she thinks about people who believe she’s just famous for being famous, Kim K compared reality shows to rap music and said she'd like a star on HWF:
I’m not naive to the fact that I’m not a singer or an actress or anything like that. I’ve never claimed to be anything that I’m not. I think reality is still a new form of entertainment that was kind of an unexpected thing.
It reminds me of rap music. When rap music first came out, people were like, We don’t understand this, what is this, it’s just a fad. But rap music is definitely here to stay, and I think reality shows have proven they are as well. But when something is newer, people don’t really understand it.
I think there was a quote where somebody said that reality stars will never get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. So, of course I’m so competitive that I think that it would be a huge achievement and a goal that anyone would want. I would love to break that mold.
I totally support you on this, and I think it will silence some critics too.
I totally support you on this

Falconets’ coach says he has respect for Mexico but …

Edwin Okon, Chief Coach of the Falconets, has reaffirmed his respect for the Mexican team that they are to confront in Thursday’s quarter-final match of the ongoing FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Japan.

Ejiro Femi-Babafemi, Media Officer of the Falconets, said in a statement released on Wednesday from Japan that Coach Okon said the match would be full of surprises. “This is a team that came from a 4-0 goal deficit against Japan in their opening match to qualify for the quarter-final. “It shows that it is a team with great potential and determination,” the statement quoted him as saying.

It adds: “but l have told my girls not to be deterred, but they should be resolute. All the eight teams left in the competition are targeting the trophy, so it is going to be a tough fight.’’

The statement also said that the girls have also practiced penalty shoot-outs, in case the match entered into extra time. “This will be the second meeting between the two teams.’’

It also quoted Okon as saying that in 2010 in Germany, both teams played a 1-1 draw at the group stage of the competition.

The statement noted that players and coaches were now in the habit of studying the video recordings of the opponents’ matches, noting that the national team had an edge, having reached the quarter finals in the 2010 edition.
Mexico was knocked out of that tournament by Korea Republic. Meanwhile, it said that Singaporean referee, Apbai Abirami, would be at the centre in Thursday’s game, to be assisted by Cui Yongmei of China.

Lee Seulgi of Korea and Qin Liang of China would be the second Assistant Referee and fourth official, respectively.

World Bank budgets $300m for youth employment in Nigeria

The World Bank has budgeted 300million dollars for Youth Employment and Social Support Operation (YESSO) scheme in Nigeria, Marie-Francoise Mariel-Nelly, Country Director of the World Bank in Nigeria said.

Mariel-Nelly made the statement in Abuja on Tuesday at the 53rd Annual conference of the Nigerian Economic Society (NES). “We are preparing a Youth Employment and Social Support operation (YESSO) aiming at supporting the provision of immediate work opportunities and skills development for unemployed youths and women from poor households,” she said.

Mariel-Nelly said increasing youth employment was one of the bank’s global priorities as it had observed that one in five of all new job seekers in Africa were Nigerians. “The 300 million dollars project will cover all parts of the country in up to 20 states,” she said.

Mariel-Nelly also said that the World Bank with support from the EU would launch the State Employment and Expenditure for results project (SEEFOR) in the Niger Delta region. She said the aim was to take youths off the streets as well as improve the country’s infrastructure.

She said that through ACCESS Nigeria, the bank had demonstrated commitment to opening employment opportunities for graduates of Information Communication Technology through target training in core competencies benchmarked to global industry standards.

“The bank provides matching grant as seed money to empower young farmers to adopt new technologies and acquire capital assets, which they use to undertake a wide range of value addition and small-scale income generating activities,” she said.

She said youth unemployment was a threat to social and political stability as was evident in the youth restiveness in the Niger Delta.

Mariel-Nelly said the bank would continue to support government efforts to address the challenge of unemployment in the country.

We pray the money does not fall into the wrong hands like it always does.

Visa: U.S. lists Nigeria, Brazil, China, as priority nations

It looks like our Visa problem is coming to an end very soon, infact after you read this you can relax and start packing your bags because the U.S. has listed Nigeria, Brazil and China as priority nations on its visa application following a surge in consular demands, Mrs Patty Neary, a consular officer, said on Wednesday.

Neary told newsmen in Abuja at the country’s Embassy weekly briefing that more than 40,000 visa applications had so far been processed in Nigeria this year. "Nigerians we can travel sha".

She said that the figure represented 11 per cent increase over the 2011 fiscal year. Neary said 75 per cent of the applications were for tourist visas, while 25 per cent accounted for student, business and official visas.

She said that a majority of the applicants were granted visas. The consular officer warned applicants against patronising touts and expressed the Embassy’s commitment to continue to provide consular services to Nigerians, and as well reduce the wait time.

I just hope "say this one on be another wash".

Oliver Twist features in int’l ad campaign: Malibu Black Caribbean Rum “Mr Moon” Commercial

Our own kokomaster Dbanj (@iamdbanj) is about the hottest 9jarian plying their trade abroad as his HIT Single Oliver Twist which was produced by Don Jazzy (@DonJazzy) under the then Mo’hits Label featured in an international ad campaign for a popular rum drink: Malibu Black as part of the brand’s “Mr Moon” campaign in the UK.

Malibu is a popular rum brand flavoured with coconut liquor to give the drink its signature Caribbean taste.

The song ran on the background song in the 32 seconds ad.

I'd like to say a big congratulations to both D'Banj and Don Jazzy because anyone who knows the ins and outs of the international music industry, should know that royalties from commercials and films are a major revenue generator for musicians and their producers which means more money in bank.

Even though D'Banj has decided to keep mum on the size of the cheque, I know he's definitely smiling to the bank and I also want to brag that the duo follows me (@franksdonald) on twitter with D'Banj being one of the numerous "Verified Accounts" that have retweeted/followed me on twitter.

Should Google be running scared from Apple after what they did to Samsung?

Apple sue us next? Not a chance.

That's the gist of Google's message following Apple's $1 billion victory over Samsung in a California patent suit. The search giant is doing its best to quell fears that its Android operating system could be the next target for Apple's lawyers. And you can't blame them.

Google has to do something to keep its partners in the smartphone and tablet world from panicking, to say nothing of investors. But experts say that while the Apple vs. Samsung suit didn't describe a legal route that leads directly to Mountain View, Google had better watch its back.

Apple vs. Samsung ripped apart both the hardware and software used in Samsung's very popular smartphones and tablets. Arguments hinged on whether certain hardware features -- like a bezeled display and a lozenge-shaped earpiece -- had been ripped off from Apple by Samsung's designers. A jury decided that in multiple instances they had.

Apple also filed claims that Samsung developed operating system features that violated Apple patents. Samsung licenses Google's Android operating system for its tablets and phones, and makes changes to personalize the user experience. Those small changes include pinch-to-zoom, tap-to-zoom, and bounce-back features, which fall under Apple-owned utility patents.

Google, which has stayed silent about the case until now, said Monday that these utility patent features aren't part of the core Android operating system, which runs underneath Samsung's and other device manufacturer's modifications.

Google gives its licensees a plain, stock version of the Android operating system, which by itself does not violate Apple's patents. However, licensees can modify the Android system and build any feature they like, and those features could violate other patented technologies.

Here's Google's full statement in reaction to the verdict:
"The court of appeals will review both infringement and the validity of the patent claims. Most of these don't relate to the core Android operating system, and several are being re-examined by the US Patent Office.

The mobile industry is moving fast and all players -- including newcomers -- are building upon ideas that have been around for decades.
We work with our partners to give consumers innovative and affordable products, and we don't want anything to limit that."

Phillip Philbin, an intellectual property attorney with national law firm Haynes and Boone, says Google's statement is a message to its partners that the verdict only applies to Samsung's products, and not the entire Android ecosystem.

"It's essentially Google saying that the patent issues apply to Samsung's software changes and Samsung's hardware, but not to 'core' Android or other Android products," says Philbin.

Looking at the case, Purdue law professor Mark McKenna says Google is focusing on distancing itself from the pinch-to-zoom, the tap-to-zoom, and the bounce-back features that Samsung created, saying they aren't included in its base Android code. "Google's claim is that those features are part of the modified experience from other companies that license the Android operating system," says McKenna.

US Open Round-Up

Williams sisters romp through, Wozniacki falls

Serena Williams

Serena Williams powered to a 6-1 6-1 win over Coco Vandeweghe in the first round of the US Open at Flushing Meadows while her sister Venus clocked the fastest women's serve in overpowering Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-3 6-1.

Serena Williams plays a forehand in the opening round of the US Open. Serena needed only 55 minutes to defeat her fellow American Vandeweghe and continue the imposing form that took her to the Wimbledon and Olympic titles this year.

The fourth seed was dominant in every department and will next face Spain's Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez.

Serena's match completed a short night session at Flushing Meadows following Novak Djokovic's 6-1 6-0 6-1 win in 73 minutes against Paolo Lorenzi in the men's draw.

Venus withdrew from the US Open last year shortly before her second-round match against Sabine Lisicki and revealed she had Sjogren's syndrome.

After a long and difficult battle to control the autoimmune disease, she is back in the second round but has a tough assignment against the sixth-seed Angelique Kerber from Germany.

Williams lost the first two games to Mattek- Sands before showing glimpses of the form that has earned her seven major titles. She landed a first serve of 124 mph (199.5km/h) - the quickest of the women's tournament to date.

Kerber moved on with ease as she defeated Britain's Anne Keothavong 6-2 6-0 winning more than double the amount of points in the process.

Second seed Agnieszka Radwanska ignored a niggling shoulder problem to breeze past Russian world number 91 Nina Bratchikova. The Wimbledon runner-up, who withdrew from the warm-up event in New Haven because of pain in her right shoulder attributed to a long season, enjoyed a speedy 6-1 6-1 win over Bratchikova in humid conditions at Flushing Meadows.

But the only sign of a shoulder problem on Tuesday was the strapping visible beneath her shirt and the 23-year-old Pole said it was something she was coping with.

"It's sometimes worse but it feels better right now," Radwanska said after her 54-minute opening match at the year's final Grand Slam.

"That's about it. "It's always different when I'M playing matches or I'm just practising and not pushing that much. Of course I had some rest before the US Open. I'm really taking care of it right now. It's really better."

Radwanska, who has never advanced beyond the last 16 at Flushing Meadows, had just six unforced errors as she advanced to a meeting with either Ksenia Pervak of Kazakhstan or Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro.

Radwanksa's sister Urszula did not have things go her way though as she was beating 6-1 6-1 by 20th seed Roberta Vinci of Italy.

Vinci's compatriot Sara Errani beat Garbine Muguruza Blanco of Spain 6-3 6-7(6) 6-1, while 13th seed Dominika Cibulkova came from behind to beat Johanna Larsson 6-7(5) 6-2 6-0.

Maria Kirilenko raced through her first-round match with Chanelle Scheepers, the Russian number 14 seed winning 6-2 6-1, while Jelena Jankovic saw off Kateryna Bondarenko in equally comprehensive fashion 6-1 6-2.

Number 12 seed Ana Ivanovic overcame a lack of hard court preparation and recent foot problems to cruise by 17-year-old Ukrainian qualifier Elina Svitolina, 6-3 6-2. and she will next play Sweden's Sofia Arvidsson who defeated Japanese veteran Kimiko Date Krumm of Japan 6-4 6-2.

Francesca Schiavone was stunned 6-3 6-4 by American Sloane Stephens, the Italian 22nd seed being joined on the scrapheap by 24th seed Klara Zakopalova who lost 6-4 6-4 to Andrea Hlavackova.

Other seeds to fall were Peng Shuai of China, who lost 7-6(5) 6-1 to Russia's Elena Vesnina and 26th seed Monica Niculescu of Romania, who was beaten 6-3 6-3 by Ayumi Morita.

Tamira Paszek, the 29th seeded Austrian, also tumbled out, 6-3 6-4 to Austria's Olga Govortsova and in the last match to finish on Tuesday, American 21st seed Christina Mchale fell to Dutchwoman Kiki Bertens 6-4 4-6 6-3.

Djokovic begins defence with easy win

Novak Djokovic

Round-up: Champion Novak Djokovic crushed Paolo Lorenzi 6-1 6-0 6-1 in the first round of the US Open on a good day for the seeds at Flushing Meadows.

The second seed took only 73 minutes to make a dominant start to his title defence. He blasted 32 winners in a complete performance that mirrored his opening match at the Australian Open earlier this year.

Djokovic also played the Italian in the first round at Melbourne Park and conceded only two games on that occasion.

Former champion Andy Roddick gave young American Rhyne Williams a harsh introduction to Grand Slam tennis as he breezed to a 6-3 6-4 6-4 victory.

The 29-year-old, whose only Grand Slam title to date came in 2003, banged down 20 aces as he claimed victory on a sweltering day at Flushing Meadows.

Williams, a qualifier ranked 289th in the world, gave a good account of himself on the vast Arthur Ashe Stadium court but Roddick had too much experience and class for him.

The 20th seed now awaits the winner of the match between Australia's Bernard Tomic and Carlos Berlocq of Argentina.

Fifth-seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga beat qualifier Karol Beck 6-3, 6-1, 7-6 (2) despite being a break down in the final set.

Sixth-seed Tomas Berdych also moved on in straight sets despite some tricky moments against David Goffin 7-5 6-3 6-3.

Milos Raonic survived a huge scare before finally coming through against Santiago Giraldo 6-3 4-6 3-6 6-4 6-4. The 15th-seeded Canadian could meet Andy Murray in the fourth round.

Obama declares Nigeria world’s next economic giant

President of the United States of America, Senator Barrack Obama, has declared Nigeria as the world’s next economic success story.

He said the discovery was one of the major reasons why his government was committed to helping the country build strong democratic institutions and as well remove constraints to trade and investment through the African Growth and Opportunity, AGOA.

Making this declaration at the ongoing US- Nigeria Trade and Investment Forum, organised by the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation, NIDOA, in Washington DC, President Obama, who was represented by Ambassador Eunice Reddick, a top official of the US Department, said his country expanded opportunities for Nigeria to effectively access its neighbour’s market, and diversify its economy beyond a narrow reliance on natural resources as a result of the discovery that Nigeria will emerge as the world’s next economic giant.

President Obama said: “As we support these efforts, the Diaspora can play an important role in contributing to a strong, vibrant, and economically-prosperous Nigeria.”

He explained that his country invests in
Nigeria’s success because it recognises Nigeria as a strategic centre of gravity, stressing that the country’s success will as well be Africa’s success if the US can help Nigeria chart a secured, prosperous, and democratic course.

The US leader also assured that his government will encourage Nigeria in the area of private investment in the power sector as well as other sectors to help seal the promise of growth and opportunity for all Nigerians.

According to him, the US government will also work to strengthen Nigeria’s agricultural sector, which employs nearly 70 per cent of the country’s population, by encouraging improvements to infrastructure that would facilitate agricultural growth.

On the US-Nigeria Bi-National agreement, Obama said that the joint Commission had grown into a forum for frank, high-level concersations, in which both nations have seen substantial reforms and mutually reinforcing initiatives implemented in Nigeria.

His words: “Some key outcomes of the Binational Commission so far have been successful integration of civil society into the electoral process prior to the 2011 elections, sustained and elevated dialogue with energy sector officials on energy policy, reforms to increase investment, and agreement to support the development of a civil affairs training center in the coming year.”

"Cool Story! I hope say dem no dey use style take mock us oh".

Why Do The Action Congress Of Nigeria (ACN) always Seem to Have Something To Say When It Concerns

ACN's Party Logo
The Action Congress of Nigeria otherwise known as ACN has described the lamentations of President Goodluck Jonathan at the opening of the 52nd Annual General Meeting of the Nigerian Bar Association as the most criticised President in the world and asking why he was being held responsible for the state of insecurity, power failure, decaying infrastucture even though his administration inherited these problems as an admission of failure, incompetence and unpreparedness to govern.

In a statement issued in Ibadan on Tuesday the 28th of August by its National Publicity Secretary Alhaji Lai Mohammed the party said that what a nation expects from a president even at a time of crisis are words that will inspire the citizens and give them confidence that the helmsman is on top of the situation and not the kind of words credited to President Jonathan which are only capable of demoralising the citizenry and telling them things are out of control and that he is completely at loss as at what to do.

Great leaders in the world like Winston Churchill, Dwight Eisenhower, JF Kennedy are remembered today more importantly for the quality of leadership they provided their various nations at moments of crisis.

Even in the face of imminent defeat and paralysing casualties Winston Churchill was still able to inspire and rally his people to victory and faced with Cuban Missile crisis President J. F. Kennedy did not throw up his hands in despondency, the party added.

Hasn’t anyone told President Jonathan that the buck stops on his desk? Hasn’t anyone told President Jonathan that an administration inherits both the assets and liabilities of his predecessor in office. Hasn’t anyone told President Jonathan that his responsibilities as President include clearing the mess left by his predecessors in office while at the same time leaving his own legacies. Does President Jonathan expect sympathy from the citizens by this open admission of incompetence and resignation to failure, the party asked.

What Nigerians expect from their leader are uplifting words, words of inspiration that can bring out the hidden potentials of its citizens, words that will galvanise Nigerians to positive action and imbue them with self esteem and not the kind of lamentations of President Jonathan that has served only to confirm that the ship of state has no helmsman and everyone is at peril, the party concluded.

Now do we have anything to worry about? Or is it just the ACN going about their usual business, well only time will tell.

Prince Harry Naked Photos: Supporters Strip Down to Support Their Prince

Prince Harry's loyal subjects are ready to show their whole body of support.

Prince Harry's Supporters

A Facebook group has popped up to rally behind the party prince in the wake of his naked-photos scandal, with members stripping down to give props to the embattled royal.

The group, called "Support Prince Harry with a naked salute!", shows its members (mostly) standing at attention to salute to the prince while cupping their own crown jewels.

And those members sure know how to, ahem, stand up! The gung-ho and fast-growing group
currently has close to 14,000 members, with many posting all sorts of cheeky pics that pay homage to Harry's strip-happy debauchery.

The group's founder originally envisioned it as a hub for military men to drop trou and salute the prince, but the page has now taken a more inclusive approach and is soliciting pics from anyone.

The guidelines are pretty straightforward: "Please cover your crown jewels, tag yourself in your photo as proof of your support to the nations favourite Royal!"

Prince Harry's naked Vegas romp:

Anatomy of a royal scandal and how Supporters have answered the call of duty, using everything from (NSFW alert!) bananas to Union Jacks to socks to heavy artillery to kitchen condiments to, well, anything else you can think of to keep those privates private.

So let's give a, er, hand to Harry, shall we? The royal sure knows how to command a devoted following.

Anambra State Government To Close Down Economic Activities Because of Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan
The Anambra government has ordered the closure of four major markets in the state ahead of President Goodluck Jonathan’s planned visit to the state on Aug. 30.

The markets are the Onitsha Main market in Onitsha North and other markets in Ogbaru, Onitsha South and Idemili North local government areas.

The state Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Chief Joe-Martins Uzodike, said on Tuesday in Awka that the decision was to forestall any security breach.

Uzodike also announced a restriction of vehicular movement in the areas between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m on the day of the visit. “All markets in Onitsha North, Onitsha South, Ogbaru and Idemili North local government
areas shall be closed between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Thursday Aug. 30. “This is to pave way for easy flow of traffic during the president’s visit in the areas,” the commissioner said.

He appealed to the traders and transport operators as well as residents to regard the measure as a necessary sacrifice for the betterment of the state.

According to him, the President’s visit will pave way for the creation of 5,000 jobs and change the fortune of the state in many other ways.

The President is expected to, among other projects, inaugurate the Orient Petroleum Oil, SABMiller Brewery, Orange Drugs Company, Krisoral Company and the Onitsha Inland port. The Onitsha Bridge Head gate will also be renamed after Dim Chukwuemeka Ojukwu during the visit.

Gov. Peter Obi had said that the President would inaugurate projects executed by both the private sector and his administration during the visit. (NAN)

Okwumo Nwabufo (33),
Ezike Olisaeloka (23),
Orji Osita (32)
And Maduakor Chukwunonso (25) were charged on an eight count charge.

Nwabufo and Olisaeloka are students while Osita and Chukwunonso are pharmacists. Some of the charges levelled against the accused were murder, rape, robbery, administering an obnoxious substance to the deceased without her consent.

The Magistrate, Mr Olalekan Aka-Bashorun, said the accused persons should be remanded in prison custody pending the advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions. The case was then adjourned till October 3, 2012.

A mini-drama however unfolded outside the court room as journalists and members of the public scrambled to take pictures of the accused persons.

“The pharmacists are not killers. Their charges were only mixed up with those of the other two suspects (Nwabufo and Olisaeloka),” their lawyer said.

Meanwhile, the Osokogu family has said Cynthia would be buried on September 7, 2012 at Bebe, Ovia Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State.

Mrs. Joy Osokogu, said her daughter was “very industrious, hardworking and a respectful child.” She advised youths to be very cautious of making friends with people that they do not know.

She also said, “Youths should be very careful, especially when they are making friends on the social media. Like we have seen in the case of my daughter, such friends may have ulterior motives.”

If only Goldiee will pick my calls – Lover Boy Prezzo Laments

The Kenyan born musician who is,the second runner up of the just concluded big brother star games, Prezzo 32, has apologized to Nigerians for what happened in the game between him (Prezzo) and Goldie.

Addressing journalist, the GLO ambassador to Nigeria Prezzo, stated that his main mission for coming into the country after the game was to come and explain to Nigerians what happened in the house between him and Goldie and to also apologize to her for everything that happened.

He also answered the question as to whether he has made any attempt to speak with Goldie after the show; he said no. That he has not been able to speak with her because, she does not pick her calls. I always remember what my father use to tell me that I should follow my mind in all my doings that is why I came all the way from Nairobi to Nigerian to reconcile with Goldie and to explain what happened.

The "handsome" looking young man believes so much in the power of God. Saying that if God says that they will be together, there is nothing anybody can do about it. So he sees his reconciliation with Goldie as what will make way if God is on his plans.

According to him, the whole thing which was supposed to be a game has gone beyond what he expected it to be. Ever since they left the house, he cannot stay a whole day without thinking about Goldie. All just what he wants from her is for her to pick his calls and here him out may be they will start from there.

He has no regrets if he was asked to marry Goldie as according to him, the both of them have the same body chemistry and they understand themselves so much and his is not getting younger. “I just want to use the media to reach Goldie and tell her to pick my calls that was why I called for a press conference”.

He also cleared the dust rising as a result of his married life. He said that there is no normal married man who will involve himself in the show. That if his marriage was still intact, he might not have involved himself there. He separated with his wife over two years now before he went for the show.

Talking about his real self, he said that there in the house, he was more of paranoid than in reality. For some of his actions there in the house, he said has no regrets for that. In conclusion, he said that the reason why he was being a bit stubborn in the house was that, Kigan the winner always feels that he is on top. So he wants to put everybody under him and him Prezzo, is not in for that so he tends to give him tough times there. Though I lost, I am not a sole loser.

He therefore pleads to Nigerians to help him speak to Goldie that for him to leave his country to Nigeria, means that he is not pretending.

Facebook murder: ‘I was a victim of Cynthia’s killers’

A model, yesterday, showed up at the headquarters of Lagos State Police Command in Ikeja, claiming she was a victim of the two undergraduates, who confessed to have killed Cynthia, the only daughter of Gen. Frank Osokogu(rtd), in a hotel located in Lake View Estate in Amuwo Odofin, Lagos.

The lady, whose identity could not be ascertained, arrived the Police Command at noon, demanding to speak only with the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Umar Manko. She was directed to the CP’s waiting room before being ushered to the CP’s office, where she described herself as a model.

She reportedly told the CP that she was at the Command in respect of the suspects. She said the two undergraduates, Nwabufo Okwumo, and his cousin, Odera Ezekiel, were the same persons that dispossessed her of her belongings in a hotel in Festac.

However,a detailed account of her ordeal in the hands of the suspects was not made available , as the CP was said to have immediately directed her to the Area E Commander, Mr. Dan Okoro, who led the team of investigators that uncovered the suspects’ activities.

When contacted, the Command’s boss confirmed the visit, explaining that he directed her to the Commander so that she could physically identify the suspects. He called on other females, who had fallen victims to show up. He said: “Other victims are advised to show up so that if there is any need to expand our investigation, we will do so.”

Beyonce & Lauryn Hill Turn Down Interview With Oprah Winfrey

Who would have thought that any celebrity would turn down an interview with the Talk Show Goddess Oprah? This was the case with Baby Mama- Beyonce and Grammy Award Winner Lauryn Hills.

According to a recent report on Celebrity Essence, Beyonce Knowles and Lauryn Hill have turned down an interview request from Oprah Winfrey.

We learnt that Grammy award winner Lauryn Hill who is currently enmeshed in over $1.5million tax evasion issue had declined Oprah’s request for an interview, as apparently she’s in no mood to discuss her tax woes.

Oprah Winfrey admitted Hill had turned her down on Twitter, responding to a fan’s request for a Lauryn feature with, “Tried. She said no.”

Oprah also revealed that she also hasn’t had any luck in getting Beyonce for a one-on-one interview. “See if you can convince Beyonce, I haven’t had luck yet,” Oprah tweeted to one fan. (celeb essence)

I can imagine many celebs in 9ja wishing "Why Eh No Be Me, I for no waste tym at all" LOL #JustSayingTho.

Nigerians Are The Ones Paying Wages of the fuel subsidy regime

FOR residents of Abuja, the past week has been particularly difficult. Before you could pronounce FCT, we returned to a regime of queues for petroleum products in the city. At a point, the black market price for the 4 litre jerry can reached over four thousand naira.

It was so ridiculous, that I decided not to travel for the Sallah holiday. I will stay here and just watch the charade play out. The more things change, the more they remain the same!

We have been here before; or more appropriately, we have remained locked into the time warp of conspiracies, official but empty assurances to do things differently, without any movement to break the vicious cycle.

A major holiday is around the corner, and out of the blues, a contrived regime of scarcity of products is slapped on the faces of Nigerians.

Usually, a strike threat by petroleum tanker drivers is issued as part of the conspiracy; chaos reigns around petrol stations; the black market comes alive; more money is extorted from citizens and after a long while, we return to the status quo ante! We are trapped into this unflattering cycle.

But the most recent problem seemed tied to the regime of fuel subsidies; the strategic decision taken at the start of the PDP regime in 1999, NOT to build new refineries by the Nigerian state and to consequently empower a cabal of billionaire oil importers, with umbilical connection to the political elite.

It was this linkage between politics and the fraudulent regime of fuel importation, which made the finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala make the declaration that “the position of the federal government on fuel subsidy payments is clear: we will do our best to encourage honest efforts by genuine companies engaged in fuel importation…”

Apparently, the irony was lost to our World Bank-manufactured minister, that what she was publicly stating, was that government will continue to protect jobs in other countries, while we have a huge population desperate for them in our own country.

When one is sworn to the biddings of imperialism, as that worthy woman is, that is the kind of statement to expect. The oil subsidy regime has spiraled out of control and like a real monster, is now threatening to eat up our country.

Caught up in a web

The burden of a historic decision not to build new refineries has now come back to haunt the Nigerian state in a most poignant manner.

The major companies caught up in the present crisis are owned by some of the best friends of President Goodluck Jonathan and are often the main contributors to the campaign funds of the PDP. So far, over N4.2trillion is owed these oil importers in 2012 alone.

In the meantime, the Presidential Committee on Fuel Subsidy indicted 170 companies while singling out 21 for criminal investigation. At the same time, the Finance Minister confirmed that 31 companies were paid the sum of N42.67billion between April and August and an additional sum of N17billion went to 14 oil marketers for claims in April and May. As we have seen in recent weeks, the owners of these companies have links to the highest echelons of government and politics.

It is an elaborate network; the Nigerian kleptocracy is one of the most powerful in the contemporary world. The sweetheart deals in the fuel subsidy regime have become so entrenched, that we will need a political earthquake to shake our country free from the bear hug it is held in, by this alliance of politics and dubious business. There are no talks about building Nigerian-owned refineries in the overall picture.

But why should they be built? It is far cheaper and more lucrative to maintain this status quo. The Nigerian people are the losers. Unless and until we break the back of this alliance of crooks, we will not make a sense of our country and its potentials.

In the meantime, those unable to see the picture or who have tangential benefits they also make from this elaborate scheme of fraud, detain us with the superficial problems of the nation building process: ‘regional autonomy’; ‘SNC’; ‘state police’; ‘new constitution’; etc.

Breaking the cabal’s backbone

One of the main issues to rally around is how to break the backbone of this cabal and the destruction of the unholy alliance, through a national movement which insists on the construction of new refineries by the Nigerian

The mantra of a market fundamentalist economy is a delusion; it was never meant to work in the first place and is not programmed to serve the Nigerian people.

They have used neoliberal capitalism to carry out a dubious privatisation of national assets; under it we have witnessed a de-industrialisation process which led to massive loss of jobs; the despair following in its wake has deepened religious and ethnic feelings with the consequent crises these have engendered.

The state must come back to play a central role in the development process in our country.

It is the roll back of the state which has entrenched the incredible levels of corruption which has sapped Nigeria today.

It is also the basis of the emergence of anti- state forces of violence and the emboldening of the secessionist projects around our country. When the state has become an instrument of a piratical elite that survives on elaborate schemes of kleptocracy, such a state cannot demand allegiance and loyalty of populations it does not take care of!

The Nigerian state is illegitimate for the majority of the Nigerian people today; the operatives of the state are mainly glorified thieves, while the ruling elite, federal, state and local, are viewed with utmost contempt, in many cases, as not better than robbers!

As we brace up for the threatened strike by oil workers this week, it is important to remember that we are collateral victims of the unpatriotic decision taken by the PDP regime in 1999, in the oil and other sectors to overthrow the state and public concern and institute private interest and greed as the central philosophy of governance in our country.

The consequences of that decision will continue to haunt Nigeria, until we overthrow those policies through an utter democratic defeat of the political elite which instituted them; in doing so, we will have to take back all that their alliance with the business barons stole from Nigeria. I see no other way to achieve restitution!

Peace-building gestures in a fractured North

AS this year’s Ramadan fast ended, I have reflected upon what I felt was one of the most important gestures of the month; and that was the grassroots-based, peace-building effort by Muslims and Christians in Northern Nigeria. From Jos, through to Kaduna and Abuja, a new initiative quickly became widespread; it saw Christian organisations, religious leaders as well as disparate groups and individuals, going to break the Ramadan fast with their Muslim counterparts.

Similarly, Christian organisations donated foodstuff to Muslim groups as a gesture of goodwill, to assist the poor amongst Muslims and when a devastating flood tore through the heart of Muslim residential areas in Jos, Christian youths and religious leaders rallied to the assistance of their Muslim co-inhabitants of what is clearly a troubled city, but one which not too long ago, was the most cosmopolitan city in Northern Nigeria.

The gestures might appear on the surface to be token in content, but they are very vital markers of the desire on the parts of people on the various sides of the divide, that is hurting the North, to move beyond crises and killings which have devastated economic life; disrupted social existence and torn apart peoples who share the space of geography andhistory as well as culture. The concerted effort being made at peace building is no longer just at the level of official and often, empty platitudes.

People in communities realise that they have to take the issue into their own hands in order to build peace, encourage reconciliation, inter-community and inter-faith accord. Afterall, everyone realises that no section of the community can wish the other away. Besides, while identity is a fact, we can build mutual respect into the differences which exist in our society.

It is therefore important to acknowledge the remarkable gestures which were symbolically tied to the devotion central to Ramadan. We must also hope and encourage everybody in the different communities in the North, to persist with the peace building efforts commenced during Ramadan, into a perpetual process to dig out of the hole of suspicion, intolerance, disrespect, hatred and killings.

They hurt all of us all around!

Central to the problems we face in the North is the irresponsibility associated with the deficit in governance. Resources supposedly earmarked for development continue to dwindle and whatever is available, is largely stolen by groups of elite on all sides of the divide.

Access to power therefore is fought out very fiercely by these groups of elite who then conscript identities of ethnicity and religion into their vicious struggle for power. A huge swathe of the population exists precariously on the margins of society, and is therefore available for recruitment for all manners of destructive purposes, at the instigation of power-seeking factions of the elite.

The framing of the other, either of the other religion or other ethnic group, has led to negative consequences for our solidarity and peaceful co-existence.

In the context of the crises phenomena which face our society today, the responsible elements of the elite must play more central roles in helping to diffuse tension and suspicion amongst our various communities and faith groups.

I think the gestures we saw during Ramadan, represent significant green shoots of growth, which the various communities of Northern Nigeria must work together to nurture into fruition. It is also indicative of the optimistic trend that reports have emerged, of tentative efforts at negotiation between the Nigerian government and the insurgent Boko Haram group.

It is an issue that I hope to examine in a subsequent column on this page. Suffice it to say, that I have been very consistent in my advocacy of peace through negotiation and reconciliation, as the most effective means of breaking the logjam of the Boko Haram insurgency.

The killings, reprisals, suspicion between faith and ethnic communities of recent years, have sapped vibrancy out of life in the North, yet I remain incurably optimistic, that we can still get things right, with dedicated labour.

The effort of people around the North during Ramadan, show what is clearly achievable, when people are determined to work together to build peace.

NUPENG strike: Group calls for dialogue

As the fuel crisis in Abuja worsen the NATIONAL Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, has been urged to seek other means besides strike in the resolution of disputes.

President Association for Non-Violence in the Niger Delta, Mr Kennedy West, made the appeal in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, yesterday, noting that the union should evolve a human friendly approach to press for attention.

The group condemned NUPENG President, Mr. Igwe Achese, for threatening to call out members on an industrial action without exhausting other peaceful means to address whatever grouse they may have against government over subsidy related matters.

The association warned the oil workers not to overheat the polity, noting that President of NUPENG was too much in a hurry with his threat to embark on strike.

West also enjoined Northern leaders to take practical steps to tackle the security challenges posed by the Boko Haram Islamic sect.

He said: “Northern elders should act to address the security situation in the north. They have to be seen making genuine effort to assist the Federal Government achieve peace in the North. The Niger Delta elders did same when their region had security challenges.”

He urged Northern politicians to exercise restraint in their attack on the Federal Government, stressing that some of their statements could provoke unhealthy reactions from other sections of the country.

Mr. West said what was needed now was a concerted effort by Northern leaders in synergy with the Federal Government to resolve the challenges in the region.

Fresh electric spark stops Obafunwa’s testimony at Dana Coroner’s inquest

An electric spark at the Magistrate’s Court, venue of the ongoing coroner court, yesterday, prevented a renowned pathologist, Professor John Obafunwa, from given further testimony on the Deoxi-ribonucleic Acid, DNA, test carried out on victims of Dana Air crash before the ongoing coroner’s into the Dana Air Crash of June 3.

The coroner judge, Mr. Oyetade Komolafe, the counsel appearing for the inquest, some of the relatives and witness had arrived the venue but were directed to take their leave when the smoke from an electric spark became intense.
The proceedings were finally suspended as smell of burning wires pervaded the court room.

Efforts by technicians to rectify the fault for proceedings to continue proved abortive, which forced the magistrate to adjourn the sitting till a later date.

Prof. Obafunwa, alongside the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, NAMA, were expected to make fresh appearances before the Coroner to shed more light on evidence they gave earlier.

It will be recalled that a similar incident occurred on Monday, August 6 when the inquest was brought to an abrupt stop due to an electrical fault that caused smoke in the court room.

Beyoncé Belts Out "I Was Here" for World Humanitarian Day As Lindsay Lohan Bling Bust Déjà Vu: LiLo Questioned by Cops After Alleged Burglary

Songstress Beyoncé took time off from tending to daughter Blue Ivy to lend her voice to better the world in a video for World Humanitarian Day.

The 30-year-old singer performed "I Was Here" in front of a live audience at the United Nations General Assembly Hall in New York, stunning in a white gown and sleek up-do.

Beyoncé is donating the video, which was produced by Scott Robinson and codirected by Kenzo Digital and Sophie Muller, as part of the global campaign that seeks to make social media history by sharing 1 billion messages of hope on August 19th to celebrate World Humanitarian Day.

MeanWhile Lindsay Lohan has once again landed on an awful familiar turf.

The star, who was victimized by the notorious Bling Ring in 2009 and accused of swiping jewelry from an L.A. store two years later, was reportedly interviewed by cops Monday after an alleged burglary occurred at a Los Angeles home where she was staying.

According to published reports, the actress and her assistant had a sleepover this past weekend at a Hollywood Hills house following a small party.

But the next morning, the home's owner allegedly discovered that jewelry had been stolen and called police. LiLo was reportedly questioned and is not considered a suspect.

A spokesman for the Hollywood Community Police tells us that the incident happened on Saturday night but was unable to provide additional information.

The 26-year-old was notoriously charged with felony grand theft in February for allegedly pilfering a necklace from a Los Angeles jewelry store. She was later sentenced to 120 days in jail and 480 hours of community service.

LiLo jokes about exhaustion scare

The star hasn't necessarily been keeping a low profile since her comebacking bid: She's been involved in a frightening fender-bender, reportedly crashed Francesca Eastwood's birthday bash and was found unconscious from exhaustion in a hotel room.

Never a dull moment with LiLo, that's for sure.
UPDATE: From Lohan's rep: "Contrary to reports, Lindsay was never formally questioned by police in connection with this incident. There are all kinds of stories floating around about what may or may not have happened, who was or was not there and what, if anything, was missing from the house.
We will defer to the police to determine what actually occurred, if anything, instead of speculating without any concrete facts.

Also, Lindsay's trip to New York was planned about a week before this alleged incident."

United complete Van Persie deal As Wenger admits United are stronger

Manchester United have completed the signing of Arsenal
captain Robin van Persie on a four-year deal.

Van Persie, 29, is believed to have cost United £24 million and has joined the club in time to make his debut against Everton on Monday night.

It is reported he will earn £250,000 per week at Old Trafford. Van Persie said: “It’s an honour to sign for Manchester United. I am looking forward to following in the footsteps of so many great strikers, bringing my experience and playing my part to help the team compete for the biggest trophies in the game. I can’t wait to get started.”

The Netherlands international forced Arsenal into a sale after publicly stating he would not extend his contract, which had only one year left to run at Emirates Stadium.

He joined Arsenal from Feyenoord in a £2.75 million deal in May 2004 and scored 132 goals for the Gunners, winning the FA Cup when beating United in the final in 2005. He was made Arsenal captain last summer following the sale of Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona but now completes a formidable United attack that also includes Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez.

Sir Alex Ferguson said: “Robin is a world-class striker with a proven record in England and in European football. "His talents need no introduction to our fans – he has scored a number of goals against us in some classic battles with his former club. His movement, finishing and all-round ability are outstanding.”

Arsenal have appointed Thomas Vermaelen as their new captain and Arsene Wenger said on Friday that the club have already compensated for the loss of the Dutchman in attack.

“We regret that we have lost a great player and for one simple reason - he only had one year left on his contract. He wanted to go,” Wenger said.

“We anticipated this situation might happen, therefore we bought Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud.

“[Selling to a rival] is not what we wanted but there was not much choice. We had only one club really interested at the level we thought would be acceptable and that was Manchester United.

“At the end of the day, [selling] was the only decision we could make.”

Meanwhile Arsenal Boss Arsene Wenger accepts Arsenal have made rivals Manchester United even stronger with the sale of captain Robin van Persie, but feels Sir Alex Ferguson is a "bit too confident" with talking up another Treble like in 1999.

Red Devils boss Ferguson believes his formidable frontline next season will be just like it was when Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke, Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer drove them on to domestic success, which was then capped by a remarkable late comeback in the Champions League final against Bayern Munich.

Wenger, though, feels juggling the likes of Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck alongside Van Persie and Wayne Rooney will not be as straight forwards as it sounds, and said: "Alex Ferguson is a bit too confident when he says 1999, but of course it increases their potential offensively because they got a world-class players."

He went on: "However, they also have a number of players - like Hernandez and Wellbeck - who have a restricted chance to play."

While Arsenal were prepared to make the 29-year-old Dutchman the highest-paid player in the club's history, it was again a case of being unable to match what was on offer elsewhere - with Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri also moving away last summer.

Wenger, however, firmly believes the days of clubs being bankrolled beyond their means are numbered, as UEFA look to implement financial fair play.

"It is a short-term problem, that the world cannot go on like that," said Wenger, who admitted midfielder Alex Song could yet join Barcelona before the end of the transfer window.

"You cannot imagine that the world will go on just splashing money out without any return, people will get tired of that because you will have just a few teams competing with each other.

"When you have lost the standard of living in life for normal people, the football world always gets higher and higher - that cannot last because people will not accept it."

The Arsenal boss added: "Financial Fair Play will make a big difference, how quickly I cannot answer because I am not responsible for putting it in place."

Federer books date with Wawrinka in Cincinnati as Serena falls to rare defeat in Cincy quarters

Roger Federer downed Mardy Fish to move into the semi-finals of the Cincinnati Masters, where the Swiss will meet compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka.

Federer showed glimpses of the form that has seen him reclaim the world number one ranking in a 6-3 7-6(4) win over Fish, who was the last American standing at the tournament in Mason, Ohio.

Four-times Cincinnati winner Federer broke in the first and final game of the first set, looking in good shape against Fish, a hard court specialist who finished runner-up to the Swiss in the 2010 final.

Fish stuck at his task in the second set but the world number one turned it up a notch in the tie-break which he won to four. "I'm very pleased that I was able to play at a high level and keep there throughout the match," said Federer.

Earlier, Federer's Davis Cup team mate Wawrinka came from behind to down Milos Raonic 2-6 7-6(5) 6-4.

Reaching the last four at the Lindner Family Tennis Centre looked a remote possibility for Wawrinka after his Canadian opponent romped through the first set in clinical fashion. Raonic's game, built on a vicious serve and a booming forehand, was simple but effective.

He was bidding to become Canada's first semi-finalist at a Masters tournament or its equivalent level since 1969, and without offering up a break point during the second set, looked the favourite to close out the tie-break.

But an impressive resurgence from Wawrinka turned a 4-2 deficit into a 7-5 win, and with it the match turned on its head. Raonic, who also had a run in Toronto the previous week, seemed to tire, and errors crept into his game.

Wawrinka saw 17 aces flash by him, but when his one and only break point opportunity came up in game three of the decider, he took it, and served out from there.

"I'm playing great tennis after two tough months. I lost in the first round at Wimbledon, Gastaad and the Olympics and it wasn't easy, but I am glad to be back on the hard court," Wawrinka.

Meanwhile, Olympic champion Serena Williams suffered her first loss in nearly three months on Friday as she was knocked out of the Cincinnati Open quarter-finals, falling 6-4 6-4 to Germany's Angelique Kerber.

While older sister Venus Williams continued her progress and moved through to the semi-finals with a 6-2 6-7 6-4 win over US Open champion Samantha Stosur, Serena struggled against an impressive Kerber en route to just her fourth defeat of the year.

Top seed Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland, struggling with a sore shoulder, was beaten 6-1 6-1 by ninth-seed Li Na of China. Serena, who had not lost since her opening round defeat at the French Open, complained of fatigue after her last 16 match on Thursday but she fell on Friday to an opponent who used a mix of intelligence and technique to make her life difficult.

"It was probably for the best that I didn't win today, even though I wanted to win. But maybe my body was like telling me not to. I don't know," said Williams, whose loss came in her 31st match, including singles and doubles action, since the start of Wimbledon. "I felt really good going out there today, much better than my other two matches but it was a false alarm.

"She didn't do too much that threw me off. Her game is pretty straightforward and you know what to expect. She's getting a lot of balls back. She played really well today and I think she served more up the T than I expected."

Kerber, who has reached at least the quarter-finals in 12 of 17 events played this year, double faulted on match point but on her third chance used a blistering ace to win the match.

"I had nothing to lose today, I tried to play my best and take it point by point because she has been playing so well recently," Kerber, the world number seven, told reporters. The German's opponent in Saturday's semi-final will be Czech fourth seed Petra Kvitova, who beat Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-3 7-6.

Venus Williams's recovery from health problems is finally delivering some results after reaching her first semi-final since pulling out of last year's US Open with an auto immune disease that causes fatigue and joint soreness.

"I'd like to think that this is only the beginning for me of more semi- finals. Of course I'm going to stay focused and try to make it to the final as well," said Williams.

"I'd like to take it a lot further. I haven't played a lot since 2010, so this is awesome for me already." Up against her in Saturday's semi-final will be Li Na who came through two matches on Friday. First she took care of her third round match, which was postponed due to rain on Thursday, beating Sweden's Johanna Larsson 6-2 6-2.

Then Li beat top seed Radwanska, the runner-up at this year's Wimbledon, who looked well below her best in a one-sided affair. The Pole said she had been hampered by a sore shoulder although she does not believe it will stop her playing in New Haven next week, the final tour stop before the US Open.

"It's been on and off since last year, to be honest. But here it's almost near the end of the season and I played a lot this year and we have been changing the surface very often and the balls as well, so it's not always easy," she said.

Li should be a tough opponent for Venus, the Chinese player benefiting from a new coach, Carlos Rodriguez, the former long- term aid of multiple Grand Slam winner Justine Henin.
