Five Perish In Bayelsa Boat Mishap

Five persons were feared dead on Saturday in the Akenfa suburb of Yenagoa when two canoes ferrying passengers capsized.

Eyewitnesses said in Yenagoa that the canoes were transporting people from Akenfa III to Akenfa I, capsized on the Epie Creek near the location where they were to have anchored due to panic by the passengers.

The accident is one of the major disasters recorded in the state in the past three weeks that are linked to the ravaging flood. It was gathered that the five persons, who could not be rescued from the creek, included a woman with a baby strapped to her back.

Some officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission said they received a distress call, and that the Nigerian Navy had been notified because the FRSC is handicapped in navigating the waters.

Bayelsa Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Fidelis Odunna, confirmed the incident but said that only three persons and the driver of one of the canoes were missing.
