Fire Ravages Scores Of Stalls In Abuja Market

At least 40 stalls across three blocks were damaged after an early-morning fire outbreak at the Garki Model Market in Abuja, resulting in the loss of property estimated at several millions of naira.

According to Manager of the Abuja Market Management Limited (AMML), Mr Ibrahim Yahaya-Joe, the fire began very early in the morning from a cold room, from where it stretched to other cold rooms and then to other parts of the market.
But it was eventually extinguished due to the combined efforts of men of the State House Fire Service, the Federal Fire Service and the FCT Fire Service.

“I received a distress call at exactly 6.02 this morning that there was fire outbreak in one of the shops with a big refrigerator and gas cylinders”, Yahaya-Joe said of the fire. “We used fire extinguishers as an interim measure to curb the outbreak before the arrival of the fire service personnel”.

He praised the fire fighters for their swift response and urged traders in the market to dispose combustible materials such as gas cylinders and other inflammable materials to prevent recurrences.

He also urged them to ensure that they have fire extinguishers in their stalls, in order to aid response operations during future incidents of fire.

Speaking after the fire was put out, Operational Commander of the Federal Fire Service, Abuja, Mr Ime Eyo traced the fire outbreak to a power surge and lamented the loss of property worth millions of naira.
